baby gar feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok with the second pic of the gar i would say it's likely a FL gar...the first one must have just been when he was a bit more washed out or a slightly different angle...even then YOY gars are hard to ID at times.

i would suggest getting a divider for that tank...this way you don't have to set up a different tank entirely. this will allow both fish to get food and grow how they are supposed to at these early stages. if they aren't separated somehow, the gar will not grow properly as the snakehead will eat all the food--

that gar look like a florida in the second pic first pic like solo said shows signs of a shortnose but in this case of the second pic i would rule florida gar..try seperting them oor like solo said a divider and see what happens

What I did feeding my babies that size and smaller over the past two seasons was to take a butterfly net or fine mesh dip net and go to local streams and ponds to catch the smallest minnows you can find. I found this was not only more cost effective but much more rewarding personally. Often times I could catch more than 100 minnows 1 inch or less in size in less than an hour. You will likely need to do this a few times a week for the first several months until they reach a size that they can be weaned off live foods. I started this due to the poor conditions feeder fish are raised and kept in along with the natural nutrients the wild fish bring into the tank which are excellent for the growth of the juvenile fish during their growth stages.

Dont be disappointed its not a gator gar as gator gars can not be kept long term in aquariums they get far to large often seeing over 2 meters in length meaning you would need a tank far larger than most homes can support.

congrats:) sorry i was unable to pop in earlier, but solomon had basically already said everyting & more.

cheers,
alex
