My lfs has a couple of the 1" long indo dats in stock and I would like to temporarily put them in my 20 gallon high with a 4" long bichir. Will this work? If not, why?

I don't think it'll work. Your dats will be too quick in the daytime for the bichir, but at night, the bichir will try to hunt down the baby dats. With the lights out, they'll be resting in a cave and BAMMM!!! bichir will chomp down on them.

I have the exact situation happens at this moment, that is a 1,5" baby dat with 2 of my greedy longfinned albino sens, 4" each, in a 40 g tank. Its been two weeks and everything seems to be OK though, but I will not try it with endli or ornate instead.
20 gall is way to small for your bichir at that size. You should upgrade your tank soon, otherwise you will end up stunting your bichir and they can grow properly.
Check out the polypterus forum for more information on bichirs.
cheers

at only 4", really? He has plenty of swimming room, why is a 20 gallon too small for temporary housing?

I dunno how long when you mention temporary, but most bichirs at that size can grow faster, which is why you should check the polypterus forum. Besides I dunno what species of bichirs you have.
cheers
