I have a baby Jaguar Cichlid that I got from a guy who had a breeding pair. The tank where his are kept is nasty, and unfortunatley all have died except for the one baby I got. Problem is, I can't get him to except any other fish in his tank. I tried to put another Jag that I bought from the pet store with him but he killed it. I even put a 6 inch Goldfish that was meant to be food for my Red Belly's in with him and he killed it (kept attacking his gills). He is only 2 inches and is mean as hell. He will flare up at me and flick his tail when I get to close to his tank. Am I better off just leaving him alone or should I try something else? The only fish he allows is a tiny little guppy that has to stay in one corner of the tank. Any advice is appreciated.

How big is your tank? Territory is usually an issue with a lot of cichlids.

I have him in a 20 long with a 250GPH hang on back and a small wet/dry that I built with a 300gph return pump. It is lightly decorated with plants and has one cave that he never uses. I tried to remove him and re-decorate when I added the other Jag and it made no diffrence. As soon as they were in the water he started to attack the new one.

That works with p's, but not really with cichlids. All I can say is you have a real ***hole of a jag on your hands. You can try turning the temp down a little for what it's worth, also might help him to be in a bigger tank as said.

He will have a larger tank as soon as I upgrade my Red Belly's home. Should be pretty soon, I was using the 20 gallon for a growout temporary home. Based on what I have read in these forums, I am starting to feel lucky to have an aggressive little guy.

P.S. His father was the meanest fish i have ever seen, Salt or Fresh. Beautiful colors

a 20g is pretty small. i had a couple of jags that i put in a 20g for a grow out. I had them in with a Pearl Gourami. The Gourami kick both their arses for the first couple of weeks. Nearly destroyed one's tail. Ironically enough...the tailess one killed the other jag and the pearl gourami. He grew to about 3 1/2 in by the time I put him in the 75g with the JD and Oscar. The Oscar was almost three times his size and the JD was twice his size...he punked them both!

After he grows out of the 20 which will be VERY FAST.

If it is a male, he'll grow around 18" long and be thick and by his attitude now, very mean

He should have a tank wider than 18" and preferably 5-6 feet long for his adult size. You can upgrade, but that means more tanks and more money. Best to get the size they need right off the batt.

Your jag is not a jerk. He's normal. Most Jags get like that and if he's that aggressive at 2", he'll be a beast at 18".
Jags will sometimes extend their territory beyond the glass and try to attack people walking by.

I dont suggest any tank mates. These guys are often best left alone. There are always exceptions and some male Jags are pretty laid back.
But yours.... well. is not.

So have that bigger tank ready soon and i would stop trying to get him friends. :grinno:

if you are not planning at least a 120 gallon tank take him back. Jags will not tolorate tankmates in that small of space they are territorial and require a lot of space. Some jags are more territorial than others yours sounds pretty beligerent. Jags will grow an inch a month and if kept in the 20g too long you could stunt his growth which can lead to other problems.
