Is there a way to tell them apart when they are young? I have seen this gorgeous jardini/leichardti looking fish (assumed from the pics i have seen here) and i am wondering if its a jardini or a leichardti. the LFS i went to called it a austrailian arowana, which is probably a jardini. So... the question is, how can i tell? do i look at the barbels? Different markings compared to a juvenile jardini? which is which? :irked:

If people go can legalize marijuana (medically), how about legalizing the importation of Red Arowanas

At least Red Aros don't turn people into D-bags.

The Leichardti's I have seen have red spots when small, Jardinis don't have them yet.

Are you sure? how about the barbels? the "australian arowana" that i saw at the LFS had the same barbel as that monster leichardti posted and it had red spots on the tail and stuff. also, i compared them to the other "australian arowana" that were in there and they were all the same. btw, they were all 29.99 each :irked:

Leichardi's have much smaller barbels when young and they somewhat point downwards as opposed to the front pointing from jar and other aro's..

but it can be a close shave..

let us wait for our australian friends to get back from the beach or whatever and start computing.....

i always thought leichardtis had their barbels pionting straight out. gill plates are patternless and they have dots on every scale. is that just about it? or am i gettin it mixed up here?

I think you're getting it mixed:chillpill:

let us wait for the Crocodile Dundees to stop surfing or whatever they do in that beautifull place of theirs and sort this dilema out....;)

Ooh, the aussies just went and circumvented us...how come??

Jardinis are a lot darker, have a shorter body and usually broader...

leichardtis have a longer slim elongated body shape, has pinkish redish spots on almost every scale and it has more of a whitish platinum color body compared to the jardini's dark brown body. it is very very obvious to tell the 2 apart
