Baby/ Juvi Jaguar challenge

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its all about the personality of the fish, my jaguar is as touch as nails, but you cant expect yours to be if you move him from tank to tank, especially an established one, everyone here is giving you great advice you dont seem to be taking. any fish that is just introduced to an established tank has to get used to it. but once they do, and size up the tank mates it is then they realize whether or not they should take over or avoid conflict. it is also true that jaguars dont really display aggression till after a certain size, sexual maturity. the point of all this is, dont judge them untill they are big enough to show their personality, like all of us, fish are more different than you think

I guess that I was not clear on the point that the initial tank that the Jaguar was housed in was cycled and empty when it was introduced as a juvi. at the same time as it's original tankmates. My plan was to growout these fish together and keep moving the group together into the final tank. I did expect that at some point the firemouths would need to be seperated from the group move up. The "slapping" the Jag into other established tanks did not occur until I felt that the Jags death was immeninent with the initial tankmates.

Another point that everyone seems to be missing is that my extremely passive Jaguar is growing at a higher rate that I have not seen in any of my other fish. It is a fantastic eater, it just simply WILL NOT defend itself! I do understand the food chain, and as I stated before, I am 100$ certain that if I were to stick this Jaguar back in with its initial tankmates, (which he is not between 2 to 4 times the size of these fish) they would be snack in under 30 seconds.

I will however take the advise that I have been given and once I have completely healed the Jag in the hospital tank, I will allow the Jaguar to establish himself in a 135 gallon rock decorated aquarium for a few weeks before slowly introducing some new "tankmates".

I will have to say that I like the fish timid and all, but I can not afford to just allow it a 135 gallon tank all by itself for life. If this attempt fails, then I will be offering up a free Jaguar for local P/U here on MFK which will be around 8 - 12" by this time (late spring to early summer)!
