DO NOT buy koi for that tank. They will outgrow the tank in no time. A 175 gallon tank is much too small for even one full-grown koi. Goldfish are a much better fit, but you will need a large, powerful filter and she will need to keep up with water changes. Keep this in mind when you are considering what fish to buy for the tank.
If you head over to the coldwater section of AquariaCentral, you may have more luck.

Also, it is a much better idea to buy more expensive, healthier fish than try to buy feeders. Look for fish labeled as "pond comets." You will spend much less on healthy fish than you would on trying to medicate and keep sick fish alive.

Goldfish can even get to big for it if properly taken care of. At least though with getting Koi or goldfish, once they get to big you can always do an outdoor pond.

There are tons of fish that could happily live in that tank for life. Why not bring her to a really nice lfs with a big selection and have her pick a few things out that she likes, then go home and look them up.

Cichlids would look nice and they are pretty colorful and active, and you could even get a few of the syno catfish that people keep with them.

What is the footprint by the way?

Also, at my lfs, they have some very pretty feeder goldfish. Usually when I get some if one I like is in the bag I will put him out him my pond. There really isn't much wrong with feeder goldfish. You just have to make sure you check the tanks out and make sure there are no visible signs of parasites and what not. They are not all bad like some people make them out to be. My pond outside has all feeder goldfish. They are all very healthy and nice looking.

No, there's nothing wrong with feeders, but be sure they're healthy feeders. Don't buy from a tank with floaters, dead fish, or obviously sick fish. Even then, they still might need medications to clear out parasites and such. All my singletails were feeders, and they're strong healthy fish now, but it's definitely risky buying feeders.

koi and goldfish are different but both very messy and need to be in ponds....get her some clown loaches and giant gourami :)

Thank you all for your help and advice!!! Believe me, I have tried to tell her to get some different fish, but she will not give up. I'm still tryin though. I told already that the tank will get dirty fast, and you are better of buying a mix of different fish, but you know how kids are!!! If a koi outgrows her tank, we have a local pond, and a few neighbors that would love to have them. thanks,

Why not get 2 or so shubunkin goldfish? they're just as beautiful as a koi, and are alot less expensive... plus they would not suffer in that tank like a koi would.

NEVER turn koi or goldfish loose in a local pond, it can get you in alot of trouble.
I think she would do better with fancy goldfish.. I was 11 when I started my hobby, but if I knew I would be harming my fish by putting them in a tank that is too small, I would not do it. 13 is old enough to know better than to hurt something possibly just because you want it, no offense, but that is selfish.
Why don't you tell her to sign up on www.aquariacentral.com ? they have alot more goldfish people than on MFK, and I'm sure they could do a good job helping her decide on a good fish.

hello,

it is to late. She went out to one of her friends house, and they gave her a late b-day gift, a 5-6" platinum koi. Thanks everyone for your replies!!!
