Post a picture of it.

What's your substrate in this tank, sand or rocks? Nitrates are high or nitrites ? Nitrate levels are caused by a variety of different things. Do you have live plants? We're there fish in it or just cycling? Nitrates can be caused by over feeding, dead or decaying plants or fish? It is mostly waste in the tank. Best way to fight nitrates is frequent water changes, cleaning the tank, getting special media cartridges used to help reduce it. I would recommend doing some research on it, better to understand what it is in order to help get rid of it.

Also, water changes really should be done weekly. I do mine weekly at 50-75% for my 55g tank. What's your filtration like?

What exactly is your reading for the nitrates? Go test your tap water real quick dude, that could be your problem. I've heard of people's taps coming out at 20ppm... Also, is it well water you have at your house? That live plant should help get rid of the nitrates. Gravel could also be a HUGE problem. As stated above nitrates are usually the result of an over abundance of waste Ina tank. Problem with gravel is waste, old food, and other junk gets trapped under the gravel and sometimes, especially in small tanks where you don't have time to suction too much out, gets trapped under there. A good suggestion would be switch to sand. Waste and food sits on top of it and is easy to clean. How long ago did you switch or even rinse off your filter cartridges? They could be full of waste too.
