baby piranha dying?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
at this size they are delicate, so a very low current, no powerheads. A few sponge filters mights do the trick, with the nozzle places above the water so it's just a gentle trickle.

Or a spraybar from a low powered canister. I would avoid powerheads and big internal filters at this size.

Adult piranhas like heavy current, baby piranhas don't. In the wild baby Ps usually reside in very still water.

i had 5 baby red p's and by the time they were 2-3 inches i only had 2 left..

ay jj, its normal for reds as juvenilles to nip each other, and sometimes even cannablize the smallest P in the group. you know how i have like 50 babies still, i lost like 4 or 5 because they were the runts in the shoal, and got picked off.

get the pH as close to 6,
water temp to 78-80
get ammonia, nitrates, nitrites down to 0
and i say you should get a powerhead , but not too strong of one.
get some blackwater extract if you want.

and how are your reds doing?
wat are you feeding them now?
mine are pretty crazy, im hand feeding them and their getting close to 2''.

the count seems to be steady, i got 12 left. I feed them frozen bloodworms and thats it. they are .75 to 1". They don't seem to grow fast. should i feed them the bloodworms once a day or twice? the pH is 6 and temp is at 78 now. They always hide and it seems like i got only 2 piranha but i know i got 6 times that lol

mm, i feed 3 times a day, sometimes more o_O.
raise the temp to get them more active, no higher than 82. if their hiding, it probably means their not comfortable in the tank. maybe add some more hiding spots, or maybe its the light, could be too bright.

lights are dim, plenty of hiding spots. i heard they are shy when they are small. they are all 1" or under.

I'd just add, to feed them small amounts often. at that size they will grow like weeds but they can't ingest much (and soon they're hungry again).

My baby RBP are 1" each now. I gave them their first feeder fish (rosie red) and they don't tear it to shreds. They just nip at it and eventually it dies and falls to the floor, then after that I don't see it anymore. Is this normal? Do piranha's normally feed like you see in those videos? :|

thats still too small to be ripping up feeders.
mine are aroudn 2'' mark now, and i do give them a feeder guppie/rosie from time to time. the guppie usually hides in my plants , but if they see it, they just bite it and its prettymuch over already. and Ps are usually messy eaters. try putting in some shrimp pieces, they'll tear it up and the oil will get all over your water.
