can someone please help me out, i just bought a baby red tail cat probably 4 to 5in. i need to how much food and what i should be feeding him....im feeding him live gold fish now, is it true that they will over eat?

its true that all fish will overeat if given the chance. get him off feeder fish asap, because they are low nutrition and often carry diseases. try feeding him market shrimp or earthworms and see how he likes em

Yes they will over eat. Be careful overfeeding RTC's as if they eat too much, they will regurgitate the food, fouling your water to the point where several immediate large water changes are required to save your fish.

Also, hope you got a massive tank for it. ;)

before asking what you should feed him, you may want to ask people for pictures of their red tails, so you can see for youself what your gettng into, incase you dont know already. these guys will easily need a tank thats THOUSANDS of gallons, as they can reach a MASSIVE size.

once you have that covered, get him off live golfish ASAP. feed shrimp, krill, fish fillets, hikari massivore, small cats (kidding) if it can fit into his mouth, and it resembles food, your RTC will eat it.

^^^ Agreed^^^

Hopefully you know what you're getting into. they grow prety fast too. I know a person in this forum that picked up a 9"er a couple of months ago and now it's pushing 13" allready.

i hope you realize that it will eventually outgrow any tank-those suckers get huge! start him off with a good quality pellet-NO feeders. and they eat pretty much anything.

this is one at my lfs that is stunted apparently. its in a huge tank something around the lines of 14'LxW4'xH6'. it just touches front to back. its tankmates are guppies of all things, hundreds of them from fry to adults. this guy would be the only reason i would be allowed a huge tank says the wife. she loves them.
for reference my hand is approx 8" finger tip to wrist.

I am raising 2-4" babies(1 for my nephew who has a pond) and 1 for me,these 2 destroy earthworms as soon as they hit the water,i have read that at this size Mysis Shrimp and earthworms are the best thing for them.

definitely get some Massivore or other quality dry food, and also fresh foods, like Tilapia from the supermarket
