Same with me. If I saw that he wasn't doing well, I wouldn't keep him around for my sake, but he's doing fantastic. I keep getting so excited every time I feed now. I have converted him to eating pellet, and not just massivore, he loves every pellet that falls in. Veggie stix, krill bits, the catfish pellets, and the spirulina pellets, not to mention how funny he is trying to swim around catching flake in his mouth. He still gets his chunks of shrimp and tilapia, (what he used to solely eat) but to watch him get that famous round cat belly after stuffing his face full of pellets, I can't get enough of that lol. Any pics of you and the OP's baby? He will retreat to his cave after wards and sit watching me and I crack up thinking that he's in there moaning "uuuuuuuuuuuh... tooo.... much.... foooood..."

Can fish burp? lol
well no wonder why he is always smiling.. he is happy... and has a great diet... which will keep him heathy.. i have been trying to introduce pellets too.. not sure yet if those tiny little things are being eaten.. but he loves cooked shrimp and frozen silversides.. {cut up very small} i will get you a pic tommorrow.. your RTC is a charmer for sure, i hope mine smiles like that eventually... :D

You can trick him like I did, and stuff pellets in the shrimp :D Kinda like a dog with a pill. cheese and peanut butter lol. With little pellets, it would be "easy" to stuff a bunch into a little pocket He freaked out one time, and a few pellets popped out of his mouth when he sucked in the shrimp. He turned vertical trying to get in from behind a rock, and finally got it, then went back to looking around for more. Is it ok to feed cooked shrimp to fish? I wasn't sure, and my hubby accidentally bought cooked, not raw. I personally don't like it unless it's either scampi or wrapped in pepper bacon. I was going to try to throw some pieces in and test the waters so to speak.

I think mine is deformed, causing his upper jaw to be really flat. He has a bad under bite, kinda like a toothless bulldog lol.

You can see in his baby pic I posted at the beginning of the post, he always had that face, and (i apologize for the crappy pic) here is a different view of his face. I took some better ones on my real camera, though not as good as most here, but I will post the ones of Joker I took. He's colored up more since starting on pellets, and has bulked up too. His tail is noticeably redder. IMO

He is a great redtail, its like a human, people always seem to have just abit more love for someone who is disabled or handicapped, it seems to bring it closer to the heart, My newbie seems to have a bad case of gill curl, i did not know it was so bad but everyone who views the pictures tell me so, ive never seen gill curl before but noticed it because my missus said "oh look MR T Has ears, um no huney thats curled gills...but all the same he in our eyes is a real looker, i usually feed all my fish with frozen prawns which i chuck in a cup with boiling water for about 1min, they go nuts for it, however he turned his nose up, so as i read somewhere before, people throw in frozen prawns i did just that, he scoffed the whole lot, greedy begger...If at all your intrested in seeing a bad case, look out for my thread in the picture lounge

From what i read on gill curl... which by the way information is scarce... they can live a long happy life even with the gill curl as long as it is not severe... now i do not know what severe looks like.. but lets just hope we are mild cases...lol... thanks for all the tips on feeding etc..View attachment 476261here is one pic.. i have to adjust my camera settings.. so i will get better ones over the weekend

Awww! I love him! I'm so used to seeing jokers face, that when I see another RTC, it's like falling in love with them all over again

Gill curl can be deadly if it starts to curl the gill plate. Then is the time to panic, because there is nothing you can do about it (but to cut the gill plate). Curling of the gills (only on the soft tissue) will most likely house parasites, Bactria, food and so on. If water is kept clean, no worries.

Mine had gill curl since it was 5" due to poor water quality growing in my friend's 120g. He's almost 15" and still has it. I don't think it's reversable but they can still live a happy life with gill curl. Downfall is they just look gimped especially when it's only happens on 1 side. My 8" RTC/TSN doesn't have it though:)
