hey i guys, i plan on getting a baby arowana with the egg sack or whatever still on it sence there only 20 bucks. hes gona be in 29 gallon. any tips or anything would be nice. and what about the egg sack? when does that fall off? thanks guys, Matt

I got my silver when it was around 2.5-3 inches long, but no egg sack. He didn't eat for the first day as he got used to the tank and the second day he started eating blood worms. Be patient with him and constantly check your water. Personal experience: don't place him in a tank with any other fish at this point in time. My oscar nipped mine pretty bad and I had to move him to a 29 gallon to heal.

Matt.. hi.. baby arowanas with egg sacs are very fragile.. they live on the yolk sac for a certain period.. it doesnt fall off but i guess it acts as a means of nutrition for the baby arowana. arowanas are a lot more stable when they are about 6". i've had them from about 4" and they are fine even at that stage. a 30gallon tank will prob last the aro until about 8". it is wise to plan ahead and see what is the max you can provide for the tank. i'm not sure how aware you are about arowanas and their care.. i'd suggest you have a read at the this sticky for a whole load of info..

all the best.. cheers..

yeah i planed on putting him in a 20 gallon long alone. i think i might just go ahead and buy a 3-4 inch one for 30 bucks. from what ive been hearing there pretty fragile and the car ride home is 2 hours. thanks for the help!

if u want try to get it with no egg yolk still attached as they r very fragile at that state.
20G is good enough to raise it till about 6-7 inches long, if ur tank is long style, but be aware they grow pretty quick from small, so u need to find another tank while he is in that "grow out" tank

So you're saying the 20 being suitable for a month is more than enough to start off :screwy:

20 would be good for a fry. That's it. Don't assume that you can keep him in that for longer. He's going to need a much larger tank in a shorter amount of time than you expect. If anything, start cycling your bigger tank now while you raise him until he loses his yolk.

Try to get him on pellets or hikari or whatever. I spend about €20 a month on prawns and fish fillets for My Aro .
