I am planning to ordered a batch of 10 - 15 baby silver arowanas. They will be 10cms in size.

They will be put in an 8 foot tank. But I do not have experience with these large number of silvers (only kept them on their own before). I plan to sell most of them in 3 to 6 months once they grow a little. So my plan is to keep running costs low.

My questions are:

1) The tank is two foot high, I only plan to fill the tank with one foot of water to keep my electricity and water bill down. Will this be a problem? I know silvers dont need high water levels.

2) As they will be juvies, what can I feed them which will be low cost. My current silver would only eat Hiraki tropical food sticks (which is the most expensive pellets here) when they were young. Is there another popular brand pellet food which baby silvers like and is cheaper? What else would you recommend feeding which is cheap.

3) I've seen large number of baby silvers kept together, should I seperate each silver arowana in case they fight? or is it safe when they are young. The 8 foot tank which I've ordered has enough dividers to seperate each silver arowana.

Any other advice would be appreciated. Cheers

1. that should be fine + how wide is the tank?
2. i don't know about the prices over there but they eat just about any kind of food given to them. try hikari cichlid pellets the floating kind i believe those are cheaper.
3. they should be fine. there will be fights but nothing too serious. if you must separate then do so.

yes of course u can house them together they are good mixers. but this is not your long term home for them right? or are you going to sell them? only problem is a single silver arowana needs at least a 10x5x3 to house when mature and with the water level thing a fully grown aro will be deaper than 12" itself so youll need a 3 foot deep. are these going to be kept long terms you ddnt make things very clear. an 8x4 is an acceptable home for 1.

feelingtogood - thanks from my experience the hikari pellets are harder and it is more difficult to chew and swallow. I've found that the hikari pellets tend to crush in their mouth and is easier for them to eat. Is there any other soft crushing type of pellets which is cheaper?

a 250 gram packet costs $30-$35 here which is expensive.

I really should double check what i post. Ive corrected below.

i was thinking of trying that too ..the raise and sell...how long could juvies be kept together before the agressiveness gets to out of hand?

The aggressiveness does not get out of hand with aros as they grow in general - when there are many of them. The more the merrier - though that means big tank of course

Yeah, Hikari tropical cost around that much over here too but it is supposed to be good for them. Hmmm, in Ozland the market prawn is not so expensive from my memory. Feed them small raw pieces without shell. That should do the trick in terms of cost i recon.

Frozen bloodworm cubes are also good for juvi aros though i don't know the price of frozen pack.

Don't forget to post pics once you get them ^^

Your 8 foot tank should be fine for the Aros. Long-term even. However, is there no way for you to up the width to 3 feet? Also, if you want the tank as a long-term setup, chances are that you''l at most be able to only keep 3-6. Most Silvers kept in Aquariums only grow within a range of 27-36 inches, so width would be your real problem.
