I finally got my baby arowana's last night from my lfs. I picked up 3 of the little guys, they are about 3" long, and are swimming around happily in my 180 gallon.

Now before any of you guys jump all over me for having three. I know it will be too small eventually and I will be removing 2 of them in the future once they start growing, I just wanted more than 1 so they wouldn't grow up lonely. But in the end I am only keeping one.

They were eating freeze dried blood worms from the LFS, but I also picked up a bag of this stuff:

I used to have a cichlid community tank, and had around 50 fish in the same tank, but I am wondering about filtration for the arowana.

I currently have:

2x Emperor 400 HOB filters with filter floss in them
2x Ehiem Pro 3 canister filters
2x Hydor Koralia 4's for water movement.

The Ehiems have inline heaters, and the tank is currently at 80-82. Is that good?

Should the Koralia power heads be removed? They are on each side of the tank blowing towards the middle, I never see the arowana quite that low so I don't see it being an issue currently. I do see the little guys playing in the water current of the filters though, getting pushed around by the water flow, and then swimming back up and doing it again, as if they are playing in the current as if it was a ride. lol.

I have fed them this morning and they gulped up the blood worms just fine. Only trick is finding them in the tank and trying to position the food near them.

Here is a question too:

I noticed that their pectoral fins have a lot of black in them. Their tail fins seem really black as well. Their bodies are a nice silver color, but are these things mixes? Will they lose that coloring with time and turn into a nice clean silver color?

I will post pics later tonight.

Haven't got a silver that small. Smallest i've seen is like 6"? and they don't got any black in em so i'm guessing they might lose them? And some silvers do get a little red in their scales, fins and tail at around 6" - 12", atleast from what i've observed from my dad's silver comm.

you should be fine on the filtration and you're fine on the food.. looks good!

Your silvers are small and have soft pallets, continue feeding the blood worms 4-5x daily. Always put the food in the same spot, preferably were current is low, the aro will learn to find the food there. In about a month(4") start crumbling the food stick and feeding along with the FDBWs. Gradually increase the size of crumbles and reduce the amount of FDBWs. Once the aro are fully eating the food sticks you can reduce feedings to 2-3x daily.

Make sure that your tank top is sealed tight, arowana have a way of finding there way out of the tank and onto the floor. As they get bigger you will also have to weight the tank top.

I have now experienced this first hand. I went to feed the guys this morning, and could only see one of them swimming around. I looked to the floor near the back of my tank, and found two crispy arowanas.... :(

They found a small opening in the back of the glass near the filters, and popped out over night. ARGH!!!! I have since sealed it up nice and tight. Litterally the opening must be only a few cm's square, yet TWO of them popped out of it. Back to the LFS to replenish the stock while they still have some there....

What a HUGE piss off. There goes 50 bucks dried up on the floor....

acttr
that sucks man the other night i woke up hearing a banging noise i thought nothing of it and then realized it was my arowana that jumped out! i put it back in the water safely.. and he's fine now
