Today i was at my lfs and saw they just got a few baby spotted gars, they are pretty small right now similar to the size of a small needle nose, i was wondering maybe if i got 2 at the size they are, and would it be ok to let them both or if i got 1 stay in a 20+ gal tank for a little bit of time to let it grow a bit bigger to put in my bigger tank, would that be ok?

I think it would be kind of cramped. Is it a a 20 long or standard 20?

If they are to small and you feel they would get eaten, then I would say no, cause being in that small of a tank could affect their grow.

If they are to small and you feel they can't compete for food, then I say get them, fatten them up in the 20 and then add them to the big tank after a couple of weeks.

Just my 2 cent's.

well im getting rid of my 2 oscars tommorow hopefully, and i figured the oscar and gar would be a problem cause of she size difference, and with the wholle feeding, so i figured if i got them let them stay in the 20 for a few weeks to get a little bigger than the size they are at the store now, so they can get food when i feed in the bigger tank to, so it seems alright to let them grow for a few weeks in the 20?

Seems alright to me if it is only for a few weeks and no longer than a month.

Don't have any experience with them. I do know they can be traind to eat frozen, freezedried, and somtimes pellets. Just fatten them up first and then do the starve technique and they will or should eat the other food when they are hungry. Or you might luck out and they could take it right away.

I assume that they would grow at a pretty fast past though. I would guess at lest 12in in a year if not more.

Two small (Lepisosteus) spotteds or Floridas will do fine in a 20 untill they reach about 10 inches. The tank size does not affect their growth. If the fish are small (I do not know what small needle nose size is) they can actually be kept in a 20 for months not just a week or so. Do not add a small gar to a community as it will not fair well as they are not the most aggressive feedersat small sizes.

Spotteds / Floridas (if we are talking about the same fish which who the hell knows as common names suck, I'm talking about Lepisosteus only here) Will readilly take frozen foods and they grow very fast when well fed.
