Baby spotted gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It won't affect their growth or anythig like final size. But it could affect how they grow. It is somthing that I just don't like to seen done if you don't have too.

Doesnt sound like a problem then.

it is actually often times better with gars to start them off in a smaller tank and move them up stepwise, than putting them into a huge tank right away (even if they are the only fish in the tank, or just with other gars). richard (brooklamprey/polypterus) and i have discussed this in depth and have had much experience with this sort of thing. in smaller growout tanks the gars seem to be more aware of their surroundings and space limitations, and orient themselves appropriately. they will continue to grow just fine. when they reach a certain size, they are moved up in tank size.

a major problem with gars in captivity is that they can break their backs if they run into the glass or other objects too hard too fast. although its somewhat counterintuitive, keeping the tank somewhat small with the smaller gars seems to prevent this from happening much more than putting them into a large tank.

again, the 20g (preferably a 20 long, but the other will suffice) will do for quite some time given that the gars are starting out pretty small. good luck!--

I would recomend you do a lot more research before you buy any fish. Yes a 20 gal may be fine for a few weeks or even months but what is this "bigger tank" he will be moving into? Your spotted gar will grow to 3ft+. Also due to the rigidness of their scales and body they have a harder time turning around than most fish.

I don't think it's very good practice to feed your fish food that your mom might be cooking up. But that is just me. I didn't mean for this to be a bash you post its just a lot of times people are not informed and even if you think your 125 gallon is a big tank in the monsterfishkeeping world it really isn't

I would take E_americanus!! trust me he knows his stuff!!! helped me out quite a bit!!!
Check him out at AquaticPredators.com he has heeps of great info for anyone keeping Gars!!!!

Can you mix a spotted or any other gar with silver aros? Would you want them the same size, or ?

some people do with sucsess but remember gars are more laid back and slowly hunt for prey were as aros are agressive when it comes to feeding so you would have to make shure every one got fed!!! I have both florida gars and aro's and I keep them in seperate tanks!!
thanks T.R:thumbsup:
