That of course is the $64,000 question, for some reason when shovelnose were first bred, they were used as a model to bred other more endangered sturgeon, the US fisheries or one of those official government agencies suggested the shovelnose be sold into the pet trade. but markets in Asia were easier to sell to and the idea went on the back burner for many years. then sturgeons became big business in Europe and the Sterlet was being bred in the millions and a lot of those were sold into the pet trade. so instead of using a native sturgeon that was a better choice for aquariums both in size and in temperature tolerance not to mention they were native fish, they decided to allow the importation of an exotic sturgeon and no one tried to bring the shovelnose to market in anything but tiny numbers. Right now it's very difficult to find shovelnose in the pet trade, many reasons for that but the biggest is that production has gone down in favor of other species and the ones that are bing bred are going to Asian markets where they are raised for roe and food. I try my best to promote the shovelnose but far too many people are willing to accept other sturgeon that are not suitable for even the largest of fish tanks because they are cheap and available. Every once in a long while a few shovel nose will come up but not very often. What people need to do is ask fro and insist on shovelnose sturgeon, e-mail the producers of shovelnose and ask for them. the more people who do so the more likely they will be offered.
