Baby's to beasts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
maybe he has compaction

Pardon my butting in, but I bought one of these guys at my local Petsmart (labeled as a "dinosaur bichir - - any ideas?) at maybe 3". Something had me thinking he'd grow fast, but I'm not seeing it. What should my expectations be? One particular food better than the rest? (I'm using Hakiri sinking disks - - not the smelly ones for predators.)

He's currently in a 30g with a clown loach (3.5") and an 8" pleco. I've got a nice 200g waiting for him, but I'm afraid I'll die of old age first.

Thanks.

Your dinosaur bichir is most likely a Polypterus senegalus the growth rate of an avg. senegalus should be up to and inch to an inch and a half per month till approx. 7-8 inche when it slows.
Polypteerids are non agressive PREDATORS(hint hint as to what they eat)try hikari sinking predator pellets also try some of these frozen goodies
silversides or lancefish
mysis shrimp
brine shrimp
krill
bloodworms
tubifex worms
squid
beefheart
Simply thaw and feed

Also be advised plecos are not recomended tankmates for bichirs.Plecos tend to develop a tatse for slimecoat and can do a great deal of damage to bichirs removing it-Anne
