Back into the hobby after 15 years....help me ID this parachromis!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Although its probably too young to be sure, and the large spots my shrink, the OPs photos look female to me. The large spots on the gill cover and jaws are usually female traits.

Some pics of my male and female when they were small..first five are the female...last two the male... the pics at this stage,i think both my male and female look similar to each other and joeboxers.and with the male/female indicators starting to show..one thing that makes me think male for joeboxers RTM are the small spots on the unpaired fins.....my female had a few at one point but they disappeared,,,also I think the profile joeboxers looks more like my male as I see my females profile/snout as being more contoured....and then the red beginning to appear on the gill plate area as small and and spotty instead of a larger patch of red....just my 2 cents..hate to disagree with Duanes seems like he is always right lol...and he was on point with info on my RTM..

Thanks very much for all of the input. This is a lot of great information.

What I am taking is:

- regular water changes
- pellets as a staple, feed treats once in awhile
- my GT is doomed...I either need to accept a one fish tank or get a few more cichlids to spread it out, but that wont probably last too long either. Is there any detriment to keeping him alone? Will be more shy? Less socialized/stimulated?

I took a couple more pics, this time with my camera (and one of the GT and his shredded tail). It's hard, he's either in his cave or chasing the GT around, so not really sitting in one spot and being visible. I will try again in the morning when I feed them again.

I really dont know if its a male or female!! So hard to tell. For some reason the head shape tells me male, but I don't know too much.

I would move the GT to hospital/isolation tank or at least a Breeder Net until you figure out what else to do. Fins damage is one thing but that's fin damage that says "RTM will not stop until it's dead" A lot of times, by the time you see missing scales, it's too late.

Thanks, I think I'm going to return it to the LFS. They have a tank full of baby GTs so he should recover nicely. I just dont want him to die.

Need to do it discreetly....wife is already rattled that the RTM has killed 5 fish lol....

Any issues keeping him alone? Should I buy like 10 fish to keep him stimulated? I feel like he's just going to kill all of them...

Yup the spots around the fins indicate male to me too, females are usually more of a solid color. When I moved my male (my avatar pic) to his own tank he would always stay hiding was very shy. Had him alone for about 4 months and he never changed until I got him a few females to pick for breeding and now he chases me when I walk by the tank. Don't know if u wanna go that route.

Convicts are very tough lil fish u could get like 3-5 males and a few hiding spots with a few plants to break the line of sight that might work.
