Today I decided to get back into the reptile game. I've kept turtles almost all my life, but snakes I was back and forth. But between the grass snakes, bull snakes, etc. But today I picked up a little ball python. And I'm an avid fish hobbiest, but I really am enjoying this snake. So relaxed. Just posting to say howdy to the reptile side of MFK. And if any of y'all have any tips for me, or advise... I'm all ears! Thank you for reading.

Also, when feeding, its been trained on pre dead frozen pinkies, how do I prepare the frozen food for the snake? Cause I know snakes react to heat. Thanks in advance.

And he is in a 29g temp right now. Fairly empty, has a water bowl, bedding, and a hiding structure. What should I do to make the snake feel more at home?

The only advice I can give other than going on some ball python forums is leave it alone as much as possible.
Ball pythons are so easily stressed in the first month or so in a new home, especially after being in a store or an expo, that I've found just leaving them be until they are on a regular feeding schedule is best.

OK. It was fed every Thursday. Is that one a week schedule healthy? And how should I prepare the frozen pinkies to thaw and get the snakes interest?

I have always personally thawed rodents in zip lock bags under warm running water. It might be necessary to flip it over half way and feel around after for any cold spots.

That's a cute looking guy, if you want to go the extra mile you can put another hide on the other side of the tank and hopefully he will be a good eater for you. It's good to criss-cross between fish and reptiles, it's the perfect balance. I'm picking up a new aquarium later today.. can't wait.

change your bedding.. balls need humidity.. cypress is a much better choice for them.. especially when you keep them in tanks..

oh and if you are talking about pinky mice, thats way too small for an animal that size.. should be able to take a hopper at the least.. and you should switch it to rats ASAP. some balls get stuck on mice which slows their growth..

I wasn't seeing any small rats, small enough for him at least. And its not permanent setup. I was just getting him started, and after the first cleaning I was going to change the bedding. And the air is naturally very dry around here. Would simply spraying a water bottle a couple sprays into the tank be good for humidity until I can get a humidifier or something?
