Hello,
I'm planning on adding lots of pothos to my 75 gallon angel tank to get nitrates hopefully very low, consistently. It's stocked at this point with 7 angels but I've seen people near me who've tried pothos on stocked tanks and its gone great for them.
ANYWAY- If nitrates stay low enough I want to try a few discus with my angels. I kept small Juvies before but I rushed in, didn't have enough patience, and didn't have the time to properly care for them. Now that I do i want to rectify my mistakes and adopt a few subadults off of Craigslist. Do you think they will do ok with my angels in a very low nitrate setup?
I should also add that I sink all my angels food and they forage for it like my old discus did so I don't believe feeding is going to be an issue.

Thanks for reading this fairly long post and thanks for any advice!

 Doesn't sound promising but they say anythings possible. First, I believe the plant you're referring to is a house plant not an aquarium plant. It will survive for a bit but will eventually die. Next, a "few subadults" will not be able to compete for food with the 7 established angels you presently have. Lastly, 75g is not enough space for all to thrive. Notice I said THRIVE!!! JMPO "T"

Have a look in the DIY filters forum, there's a 90-something page on using Pothos to remove nitrates from aquaria.

 Ahhh!!! I see. Suspended not submerged. I gotcha. The nitrates in the water are a source for the plants. But truthfully you can lower the nitrates just as easy by changing the water which is very necessary especially (multiple) w/ Discus. I actually use my 'old' water to water my plants, ficas, cactus, philodendron etc. & find it quite beneficial. Regular water changes keeps my nitrate level between 0 & 5 ppm. Gotta admit it looks nice though. "T"

The root mass also gives great hiding spot for fish and fry. The plant purifies air and water and yes I always bottle a couple jugs of fish tank water, not only do I water my house plants with it but I water my terrariums and vivs, great natural fert.

This plant started out small and these results are after 12 months with n03 cut in half!

Sounds like you might need to just do more water changes and keep up on the tank maintenance

So the parameters are ok but you have high nitrates thus meaning you need to work on more water changes. Thats all I am saying. Hope that the pothos makes a bit of difference in your tank. I have found that with high stock it will be far less effective to ineffective. So you might see a little change but then if you add more stock your not going to get anywhere much thus water changes are the only real way to take care of nitrates.

The tank parameters are ok as it is. I added the pothos so that nitrates could be kept from rising as much as they do between changes so I could add some more fish.

Here's what happens:
After water change, nitrates are at 15.
One week later, before water change, nitrates are at 40 and discus can't handle them that high from what I've been led to believe. I don't test dutifully enough to find how quickly nitrates rise to 40, I just know that the system Ive put in place is working for the stock I have in place. Hopefully the pothos can keep them that way.
