it has more to do with the health of the fish , type of food and lighting power compact 6700 k makes gold pop while it washes red out 8k t5s do better for a more rounded color white substrates reflect light and wash out the color off your fish it also seem to stress them out bars are lighter they are more timid black backgrounds with black substrate only does make the tank too dark however if you add plants it will make colors explode especially with the right lighting its all a matter of your preference experiment and find what you like .
I have a friend that is setting up a tank for bass he bought some large tall plants that float a bit on top and help create structure hes running 8k t5s with black sand and a black background the bass sit where they would naturally at the edge of structure where they feel safest that are blinging gold and brilliant reds they are monos eatting massivore and fd krill ill try to get pics from him but it is probably the best looking fish ive seen in a long while
