A gallon will do a whole room! How big is that tank? The paint can will have an estimated coverage area. If they don't sell pints I would think 1 quart would do ya for sure, but make your decision in the store.

lol maybe I like to overdo things!!

I always end up buying more than I need. when I painted my 125 I thought 1 can would do it but I was wrong and had to go back. I ended up buy 5 times more than i needed :irked:. When I painted my 29 I bought three cans forgetting how much I needed and ended up using half a can....

maybe i should have asked like the op did

i would buy a drop cloth (the plastic ones are like a dollar), spread it out, and then put the tank in the middle of it, that way you know your carpet is safe!

yah im gonna cover the floor anyways .. but with spray paint i was just worried if any gets up in the air etc ya never know. plus i cant have my house smelling like fumes all day or id be killed

Agree with all the above on latex and rollers...it'll take a couple of coats...and if you're putting water in it soon, try not to get the back wet.

I've also noticed...I have an old cracked 20g in the back yard that I keep forgetting to toss in the trash, but the sun has made the latex paint very brittle and now it peels right off.

I have painted the backs of several tanks. A short nap roller and latex paint does the trick. It generally takes a few coats. I didnt like spray paint when I tried it once becuase it was difficult to get even coverage. I know it should be obvious to everyone, but just in case....the paint goes on the outside of the tank!

I used black spray paint in my basement to paint the back of my 125. To this day you can tell exactly where everything was placed on the carpet on that day ;P

I'd strongly advise against the use of spray paint indoors. Get latex paint and use a roller. Multiple layers if necessary. Getting a primer like Killz has worked for me. I just ask home depot to add black pigment to it and it works awesomely.

primer for the back of a tank is overkill.

Remember, you're painting the back of glass, then looking through it. Whatever you lay down first is what you're going to see...

X100 on the quart of el-cheapo black latex paint. If they have pint sample can get that. 1 pint will cover around 25 square feet, so a pint would give you enough to do 2 coats (given that glass is very smooth and 2nd coats take a little less)

If you're doing 1 or both sides of the tank then you'd probably need a quart.

I just painted my newly built stand glossy black and so I figure I'll be using the same paint on the back of the tank too. Very convenient. =)
