I know people use cement mix for backgruonds over styrofoam. I was thinking that grout for tile in showers and such comes in alot of colors and might be good to use instead. Has anyone tried this?? Any info would be great and if no one has tried it than I might.

Thanks
Jason

think i'd be a little concerned about the colors and the mildew resistant additives leaching out even plain cement needs to be netralized first and this can take weeks soaking in a vinger solution i think its vinager anyways imo i wouldnt try it if you do get your water tested for toxity before addding any expensive fish...

a problem with useing products is without a doubt the addative leaking out. at the lfs i work in we had a huge indoor pond built. when we opened we had a problem with fish dying and we had numerous tests on the water. it tuned out lye that was coating the cement rock was infecting the water. we did a water change recently and put an inch of water more than normal, same problem, all the fish died.

there are some pretty good articles on building styro/cement backgrounds at www.cichlid-forum.com

You can by cement die. It comes in a few different colors and is perfectly safe for the tank once the cement is curred.

potable is the key word. this means safe for drinking water. check out my latest tank background..
