Backup / Monitoring Systems for Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Requires oil change after 8 hrs run time and full tune up every 200hrs of run time with oil change and spark plug. Also system does 7 min self check every week have to add that time into total run time.

Oil change after 8 hours run time is a rather misleading statement. Where are you getting your number from?

Oil change, filter replace after 200 hours run time or 2 years whichever comes first.

Fires up and runs for 7 min once a week is roughly 6 hours per year so not exactly adding a lot of hours to the engine.

I just hooked up a Neptune apex system to my 750g. I love it I get email and text alerts every hour on status. I know if I don't get an alert after awhile something may be wrong and power may be out.

I run the Jr on my 600 and absolutely love it. Great investment for any serious aquarist.

I'm looking for something that will notify me as soon as the power goes out as I live out of town and work in town so I may not know if the power is out at my house. If I know the power went out, I can leave work or call someone.

I have been looking around allot at the options, the Neptune systems are super nice but will only tell you about an issue wont solve the issue, a generator backup would be great but cost more. Depends on your area as well but power is not lost here in Utah too often, so I'm thinking of getting a Neptune system to send all notices and a normal Honda generator that I can start and use if needed when things go out. The fish will live for an hour and someone is always close enough to come plug the generator in if something happens and I might be far away.

This is the route I'm leaning towards - having a small backup generator with remote starter ready to go and plugging in a cord fed to the fish room to run the FX5 filters until the power comes back on. This would require leaving work or having someone (friend / neighbor) that could come by on short notice to start the generator. Not Ideal, but seems like an affordable solution. Would also work when away on vacation - can have the person watching your fish get the alert.

All numbers are from generic engineers that come to my work place and there manuals. All generators I have sold, serviced, installed, and maintained come with break in oil only good for 8 hours for generac and must be changed. They recommend oil changed after 200 hrs or once a year with new plug and filter this is from the people that design these systems. So how was that misleading.

I dabbled in Generac small engine repair I agree with breakin oil you could get a start box and hard wire generator in. I use a low tech solution. I have a power inverter, two 12 volt batteries and a switch box voltage regulator so the solar charger does not overcharge it. It wont call you or the neighors. But it works for hours. Then I hook it up to my car if power is out for days. I have old car that will get better gas miliage hour milage than most small engines. They are not efficient.

Interesting... Can you provide more details on the setup? In particular, the switch box voltage regulator and how you have it connected to your system?

I have thought about doing something similer but after testing out to see how long my pump could go on a deep cycle marine battery. I would need a lot more batteries.

I'm running FX5's that are 50 watts each. What is the wattage of your pump and how long did it last on a battery when you tested it?
