whoa sorry to hear that, how did the canister cause this? the seal break or did a tube crack? I never knew a canister could cause flood. makes me want to move the intake closer to the top.

i haven't pulled the canister out to find where it broke.. but bin i keep the canister filter in is full of water, so i'm certain it was the canister filter and not the tank. as soon as me and the shop vac are done trying to save my carpet i'll pull it out and see where it broke.

Bummer. (been there I'm on my third wet/dry vac).

Are you going to put a syphon break hole on the out flow pipe now? :D

yes sir.. i've learned my lesson.. :(

The very reason I turned down a trade for one of my fish for a canister today. That really sucks...not much else to say.

well, it seems as if the seal between the filter portion of the fluval 404 and the lid where the big O-ring seal is is where the leak is.. i got it out of the stand after using the shop vac to suck the water out of the bin. and when i tipped the filter to move it more water came out of the seam.

i'm gonna dismantle this one and keep it for spare parts, i'm thankful it lasted as long as it did, i bought it used over a year ago. the folks i bought it from couldn't make it work, my (now ex) hubby cleaned the sand out of the motor and it worked just fine, but the sand had damaged some of the seals and the primer pump.

i've got 2 more brand new fluval 405's on the way. i still need to order a couple more MA600 air pumps though, because the flood took out the one i was using and i'm using my backup pump now.

Wow, that really sucks. It makes me not want to have a canister filter. I hope you get it cleaned up alright.

I'm gonna assume this is a hole you put near the top of the water surface to keep more than just a few inches of water from syphoning out, in case of such a breakdown?

do you simply just drill a hole in the intake, or is it an atatchment you purchase?

it's kinda tough with canisters.. you can drill a hole but then when you do water changes you lose your syphon.

i'm gonna try to figure out another way.. if i work at it, i'm sure i'll come up with something that will work and still make it so i can do water changes without having to restart the syphon at the filter. with this filter it wouldn't have worked anyway, it was always a PITA getting the filter restarted after cleaning the filter pads out.

i was always warned about this type of thing with wet/dry filters.. not so much canister filters.. i'm also going to find a different type of bin to put the filter in. getting this one out was difficult and it didn't hold very much water at all..

maybe i can find a little rubber plug for the hole for when i'm doing water changes? i'll figure something out.. i'm kinda crafty when i want to be.
