Bad idea to get a stingray?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Retic or hystrix and I think its all good. Unless after a few years they go over a 12 inch disk diameter (may or may not) then I say its time to go wider (front to back).

I saw a place that was selling "freshwater Florida stingrays" and it said they stay small(but I should ask the pros before believing an online store right?) Is that an actual name, or is it a completely different type? Thanks everyone for your input so far.

Warning! Don't do it! Need salt as adults and get HUGE like 6ft!

Lol glad I asked, its one of those 'freshwater' types. I did like how the hystrix looked. I will have black sand as a substrate, so I would think the lighter colored ray would look better.

Won't get that big in captivity I guess. You might be able to get them to stay adapted to freshwater, but they will produce insane amounts of waste that you'd need massive filtration and larger water volume to dilute the ammonia till its filtered.

At least 2ft across which means you'll need at least a 7x4

Also I've read that they are worthless as far as personality goes.

Rays can live and breed in a ph of 8

The tank is long enough but 2ft wide is a bit small for most rays

You maybe ok with hystrix for some time

The only problem with any cichlids and rays is the cichlids get a bit nippy if they pair off and will peck at the rays eyes disk and tails
