Bad Nitrate problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My Oscar is 12 inches, JAG 10 Inches, Pleco 14 inch and jacks about 5-6 inches.

A little side note, when you add conditioner add for the tank volume not the water added... ie: Seachem Prime- use 2 cap fulls for 100glns of water between every water change (once the tank is half full).

Might consider over filtering as most do on MFK (Monster Fish Keepers). This does not take away the need for 50% water changes a week. Another factor is feeding schedule. Over feeding pollutes the water.

Given the stock you have and the size, its best to do a 50-75% water change weekly depending on your tap water parameters (Test Tap water and post up your results so MFK peeps can help you out :D). Just my opinion

Your fluval hoses may contribute to the problem but wont be the main culprit. The ribbing in the hoses collect a lot of waste, if you haven't cleaned them in a while it would be a good idea to do so then step up your water changes.

whats the best way to test my tap water? do i just use my kit that i use on the aquarium?

it seems like everytime I do a water change my fish go in distress. I did a 50% last night and now all my fish are at the top gasping. I use Amquel plus as a water conditioner. Do you think that may have something to do with it? Any help on this is much appreciated. One of JDs is laying on the floor of the tank so this is not good. I checked my Nitrate which is now 5.0,Amonia is .25, PH is at 7.0. and Nitrite is .50.
