Ok, so I am trying to sell my EBJDs and I am getting messages from people asking why I am asking such a high price for him when the LFS is selling way cheaper.

I’m selling my 3” EBJDs for $50, yes it’s expensive but on par with similar size fish in my area, they are just not that available.

So I go to my LFS to pick up another heater and filter, sure enough I see the EBJDs fry, they are selling them for $20 a piece. It really pi**ed me off, yes they are cheaper but they literally just got their EBJDs colors...they might be 1/4-1/2 of an inch, seriously my thumb nail size. (I think my nail is bigger)

I wouldn’t be so mad but it is seriously just a money grab for the LFS, being so small they are still pretty fragile and most of them will die, creating repeat customers...the fish store has to know that most of them will die. Doesn’t seem like an honest business practice to me.

It’s easier for them to take $20 per fish than $40 (their usual price for a 1” EBJD) I feel bad for the people purchasing those fish.

Please feel free to put your thoughts to change my mind.

I don't see any problems with it. It's the buyer's decision if they want to take the chance to save a few bucks and raise a fish as a fry.

Not really I doubt it. people should do research prior to buying fish. If they are small and sensitive that’s the risk people get at buying fishes at a small size and a affordable price. I’ve gotten great deals from my LFS for rare fish at worms size and they survived save me some moola too

3" ebjd for $50 in Chicago you would have no interest, it's not a new fish wholesale its a $10 fish

I wish!! Hey are not that available here, I hope to change that.

And platinum and golds don’t even exist here....I doubt many people from around this area would even believe they were JDs...

LFS in Edmonton suck, that's just a reality of where you live. Big Al's which has had EBJD many times over the years also sucks, not so much from fish selection, but due to their prices. On the other hand, any idea what it costs to keep the doors open on that BA store in Edmonton? I doubt that most consumers give that any thought. You on the other hand as a non brick & mortar business, I assume a hobbyist simply selling fish out of your back door, have very little in the way of overhead so should be selling for far less than a retail outlet. Most local buyers would expect a far lower cost due to that, which is why people are asking about your high prices.

BTW - $50 in Canada = a $20 fish in the USA. Right off the hop our markets and value of currency is completely different.

One of the reasons LFS don't supply as many EBJD as they did in the past, is due to the fact that the strain is weak, and many fish do die. Some die in transport, some die in their store tanks, and some die while they are still under warranty to the consumer. Not exactly a money grab for a business, that wants to stay in business. Personally if I ran a LFS I wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole.

Your viewpoints are actually pretty good, and realistic! You would be correct I do not know what it cost to keep a large store like that in business! I guess as a just a hobby it does make sense, and that is part of the reason I want to breed them, I want to make them cheaper and more available. (The one I am selling for $50 is just one I do not want for breeding, just want my money back for him really)

And I also agree with you if I was a bigger chain store I would not be ordering them or selling them unless hey were a special order! Just not worth it.

497FB006-4EED-475A-AF0B-CA9B3A535FB7.png I do not think it is accurate to simply say that the EBJD is a weak strain. I am pretty new at breading them and from my limited experience, I would describe them as more sensitive to poor water conditions when they are small. Once they get bigger they seem to be just as tolerant as my regular jacks. I will try to attach a phot of my 7 week old fry in a 20 gallon tank. I am doing 50% water changes every other day right now and they are growing nicely in my opinion. There are 10 regular JD in the mix and the EBJD are very close to the same size.

....... says the person who admits that they have limited experience, and is also new at breeding them. No offense amigo, just sayin.

I've been following this strain since it first hit the NA market many years ago, and I have also owned one (purchased from one of Rapps first orders), as have other local hobbyists that I know. Few of them made it to adulthood, those that did died not long after. Those specimens were imported from the late Hector Luzardo's facility, and poor water conditions had nothing to do with their early demise. In fact, most of the members of this forum typically stop showing pictures of their EBJD at the 5-6" mark. Out of the scores of juvie pics posted over the years, I can't recall the last time someone on this forum posted a pic of 8-10" EBJD. The simple fact is that most designer stains are genetically weak fish, discus, flowerhorn, EBJD, etc. Over the course of many years, and many breedings, by many individuals, EBJD have proven to not be genetically strong fish.
