Get rid of the sand ASAP. I've read about a lot of horror stories with pretty much all the black sands except for 3M S and T grades and Estes Medium Broadcast.

I use a large diameter hose and siphon out the sand into a bucket.

i normally remove sand with a net. get as much out as i can then remove the last of it with the pipe when i do waterchanges.

a word of advice don't remove all the substrate at once as it holds a lot of good bacteria

i have not done it myself but i have herd of people removing all the substrate and all the fish dieing over night

i would half the tank off with something then remove half the substrate and replace it with the new leave it for 2 weeks then remove the remaining half

Agree with T1. Remove the gravel with your water change schedule, maybe taking out 1/4 - 1/2 every time. Use a really fine net to get the gravel out, or if you can find one, a big strainer, or just a plain old bucket. As for the salt, take some of your tank water out in a bucket, add salt, stir until its completely dissolved, and then pour it back into your tank. Don't add all 3 pounds of salt at once, again do this gradually. And remember, salt does not evaporate, so if keep adding the same dosage every time, it builds up.

I have caribsea Tahitan moon sand in my tank, no problems. they rays love it.
and there is plenty of people who use it with there rays without problems.

although i got the smallest size grains, is yours small also?

i wouldnt be so quick to dump the gravel mate, how long as hit been like this for?
give it a few weeks, if its eating fine, dont stress.
just keep up the water changes and keep them well fed.

please correct me if i am wrong, but if its the gravel, you should be seeing some irritation on the underside of the ray, redness, for example.

I agree. No irritation on the underside of the ray. However, the moonsand is pretty rough. When I purchased it, there were no grades. Just a standard grain size.

I already pulled it, going to look for finer alternatives.
