baddest cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Too Much News Years Eve people?- Jagas,Dovii,Oscars,Umbies,Green Terrors,9" Salvini's, and Kissing Gourami's as a replacement for the "Baddest Cichlids" for a 55gal - come on man!

OP- Salvini's, Neets, Firemouths, Convicts, HRP's, and other Thor's.

A pair of Red Jewel will be very pretty and aggressive. I have a pair in a 90 gallon tank with fry and they are one of the prettiest fish you would one to see. Mean too :).

I have a breeding pair of salvinis in a 55. The only thing is they periodically "break up" and you need to put a divider in (if you get a pair).

But I have to say, the meanest setup would be a tank of jewel cichlids. I have seen them beat up fish over twice their size. One of them being a red bahia geophagus. You can get jewel cichlids in red, or in blue.

I have a blue jewel that has to go back to the store. I' ve tried ,unsuccessfully, to keep it with my Jd, firemouth and salvini in a community setting. Had the fish for two months. Isolated it three seperate times, rearranged the decor, changed water temp, all to no avail. This fish absolutely refuses to have tankmates. Had to remove it last night....... beautiful fish but I only have a 20 gallon for it to live in so I'll probably take it back. Ridiculously aggressive fish .... even worse than my salvini

See? Like I said, salvinis would be good if you want 1 or 2. However, in a 55g you can probably have about 8 jewel cichlids; and they are the meanest SoB's you'll ever find.

I caught and kept 8 Hemichromis letourneuxi in a 55g with other cichlids (for a short while) and they had to go. I kept one pair and bred them several times.

I adopted a blue jewel last year from a finished thesis project. I figured it might play nicer in a cichlid community than a feral fish. Nope. It went to the store for $3 credit. The only thing that can fight a jewel is a jewel.

Firemouth, convicts, earth eater

answer for the 55g would be: small cichlids.
It's what you want dude. There are hundreds to name.

But one large mean grow out would be great, because u cant say never to upgrade to bigger tank. Never say never. If you love the fish and keeping it, you'll do something. Depends if youre a real cichlid lover.

i can think of oscars, green terrors, neets, geos, salvinis, and i believe umbees will work? not sure on the last one though but theres tons of ideas.

Maybe you should try google it or at least leave it out if you're not sure. A 55g is about 1/5th what you'd want for a single decent sized male umbee, at the very least..........

+1 for salvinis,s beautiful looking fish that will be content and not cramped in a 55g.

i got a new 55 gal and i want to get a aggessive cichlid that also looks good. What should i get?

Why do people ask these open ended questions that have no definitive answer? A lot of what's out there and their temperament is pretty subjective. Whatever it is, think max size 8-9" and don't get more than two.
