Letting it fall off on it's own could be dissasterous. You should really consider trimming it. You don't want a nasty fungal infection to occur. Trust me it's happened to me, and the infection was so deep it killed my marble catfish. Almost the exact same injury as your's. I hope it does work out, but if you look at it, the spine is not broken off it is ripped out of socket. That wound goes straight down on top of his spinal column. How large is the TSN? Might be time to consider an indoor pond. 8x2x2 is a little small unless your tsn is really small. I have a 350 gal cattle trough that's 6' dia and 2' deep. Nothing to injure the fish in a pond. Just a suggestion. Hope it turns out ok though. There's a chance it will, but you will definitely need to medicate, and use an antibiotic(can't stress that enough) WHen I say trim I don't mean the whole fin just a verticle cut to get rid of the spine which is definitely a loss, and trust me it will never grow back because the whole thing is gone. They can grow back if just part of it is broken off, and it might heal if only pulled out part of the way, but this is pulled out all the way. I expect that he will never have at least the first ray, maybe the second. The bottom of them are closely tied together. Share pics daily of his progress if you can.
yeh i have to agree with necro. short term pain = long term gain bro. better a small deformity compared to a potential death :s

Bad Stuff. Whew! Mine hits his head every now and then, he heals but I never thought of that! I've been wondering how to get rid of these sharp edges too. Thought about cutting garden hose to length. slitting it and then covering those edges.??

the tsn seems to be recovering well, the spike has turned completely white and all the skin around the wound that was keepin it attached has as well.after i took these pics i checked on him again a there was only one tiny piece of skin holding the spike to him.im pretty sure it will be gone by tomorrow because this guy is constantly on the move,if not il have to trim it back.im treating him with the strong pond strength melafix which seems to be doing wonders.ill try to stick some hose underneath the glass supports to make it less of a hazard 4 him.thanx necro and everyone else 4 help and advice.il post some more pics tommorow.by the way hes bout 19''.

looks like he is doing very well. i think he might just lose the spike. keep up the treatment and keep monitoring, but he looks much better. he will be alright.

just ensure that you get that out of the tank before it starts to rot. Once bacteria develops to eat that bone, there's still a fear of FTR. Looks like he'll be fine, but that wound still looks nasty. Keep up the good treatment and water changes and he'll do fine.

yeh it actually looks a lot better than day one which is a positive sign. keep us updated and if u cut the spike off take pics of the process!

gday everyone, the spike has finally fallen off, thank god. the skin is starting to cover the wound as well.looks like hes going to make a full recovery.thanks again everyone 4 your advice.il keep treating with melafix for the next 4 days,if it gets worse for some reason il post some more pics up.cheers:)
