How does one go about telling apart the various Bagarius species? I just got two alleged Bagarius bagarius in the store, and before I sell them, I would like to make sure that is what the are and not yarelli(spelling?)! I need to know if they are going to get 8" or 3' plus!! I will try to post pics tonight.

I'd say look them up on fishbase.com planetcatfish.com, and then send desielmack a PM! lol. Not sure myself, but I know they are way similar. They true way to tell is to grow them out, and if they don't stop at like 1' and keep growing really fast after that it's probably a yarelli

O.k. y'all, here are a few pics but if they suck, let me know and I'll get some better ones tomorrow! He's about 4" total length.

I don't really know all that much about them myself......they prefer cool, highly oxygenated water and get from 8" to HUGE depending on the type. I think there are three types B.bagarius, B. yarelli, and B. r-something:D. B bagarius is the smaller type and I'm hoping that's what this one is.

B. yarrelli (60")

B. bagarius (8")

B. rutilus (40")

B. sp. (?)

B. suchus (28")

I'll try to get the pics from the angles you requested today, since I take it by your silence, that these are no help:D !

they are "extremely" hard to determin and (for me at least) it is a guess...I have had ones that I thought were one species almost 100% and then find out later I was wrong. Other than doing actual ray counts there is no 100% way of ID, but there are characteristics that can skew the guess.
