I was just offered a goonch ( 8-10 inches) for $300.

I think they are wicked cool and want him. Has anyone ever kept one? If so, what is the temperament like and whats the growth rate? Also is that a fair price?

Not sure if they are a vicious sort or only take notice of fish that they can fit into their mouths but there are vendors here who currently have them for sale at a far lower price than the one you have been offered, although they are a bit smaller.

Mine is not aggressive towards anything that can't fit in it's mouth , growth is pretty slow too but this is variable. I've heard of some growing very fast. 300 is in USD ?

Native to India. Temp is aggressive and opp feeder. Sharp teeth will take chunks off fishes when the yerelli gets big enough. Max size is know to hit the 2-3m mark, when it gets there, its going after you if u go into the pond. Natural habitat is fast flowing murky river. One of the documentary claims that research have should that they eat dead human carcasses thrown into the river for burial. Bagarius are very inactive fishes, know to just park at the bottom for long time. there are various variety of bagarius so make sure u getting the right one.
Would not recommend keeping it unless u have a pond for it and light colored so you can see it at the bottom.
Growth rate I'm not sure as I have not kept one. But should be slow compared to rtc.
Some have claim that theirs are not aggressive, imo, its more like not yet.
Hope this helps.

Oh and regarding pond/tank mates. D
uh, this is MFK, I don't understand why would people here be surprised to loss tank mates to any of the fishes here.

they're not aggressive, i've kept them with barbs, dats, all kinds of fish with no problem for long term. growth can reach about 15" in 1.5 year if you think that is fast or slow. I have some larger ones for sale also, about 10-12" close but less than $300.00 please email me at amazonaq@gmail.com if interested

I've had one now for two years. I bought it from Fugupuff for $100 + shipping at 6". Right now it's at 18". The Goonch moves a couple times a week. Mostly it stays in a hiding spot. I keep it with African feeders ( I hate African Cichlids LOL) It will eat the cichlids when hungry but I drop in half of a tilapia fillet every other day and the Cichlids are fine. I keep the water at 75 and it's in a 210 so most likely I have not stunted the growth of this fish I just think they are slow growers.

If I don't feed for a couple days the Goonch is out and is not shy about chasing the feeders but mostly they are sit and wait/ambush predators. I had a 125 set up for the Goonch initially that was high flow "river" from left to right. The fish would get right into the fast flowing stream and wait for food. I would drop a couple massivor pellets into the flow and the fish would nail every one with out fail. Right now it's in a temporary 210 until it's new home can be set up again. I'm just using sponge filters for filters and massive water changes. Fish seems fine but I think it would prefer a fast flowing environment from the way it acted in the stream tank.

I can't seem to upload pics but check out my Goonch thread in the bottom dwellers section for more pics and information.

Not aggressive? I'm not saying who's right or wrong here. Will it snap one day? I've always wanted to get one but my researches told me it can be aggressive... Maybe I'm wrong. If its really not, maybe I should start to think about getting one again lol.

As long as mine is well fed it doesn't move. I've raised hundreds of African Cichlids in it's tank with out issues. Go a week with out feeding the Goonch and all the Cichlids are hiding LOL. Dr Jeckle/Mr Hyde type of fish
