Bagarius yarelli.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thankz, that was the most informative post so far! :D I took the heater outa my 75gal...it is currently 75 degrees...my room is WARM though cuz my other two tankz are 82 degrees at least...so gettin the temp below that might be kinda a hassle. I DO have excellent filtration/current. One Filstar XP3 canister filter (rated for 175gal), two ZooMed Wave Maker PowerHeads (each rated for a 75gal), and one Millenium 3000 (rated for a 60gal tank). The silver dollars have to fight the current in some parts of the tank, so i know there is enough water movement. Got the airlines hooked up to both ZooMed powerheads, so oxygenation is good. Guess all i need to do now is move fish around and get one! :D

I'm actually very interested also regarding the temperature tolerance.

I'm tempted to experiment on that, but $125 is not something I just throw at anyone and call it a day.

75 degrees shouldnt be to bad so long as you have enough current and oxygen in the water, they would be more comfortable in cooler temps but 75 isnt that bad. Sounds like your on the right path to success so far.

One more thing, they grow fast, and get LARGE! I hope you have plans for a huge tank in the near future. Mine is now 22"+ and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. I don't power feed. Hell, I only feed once every 3 days and its still putting on 1" per month.

so it would last about a yr in a 75? the one at the lfs here that ras mentioned is in a 30g. been there for about 1-2months now and hasnt really shown any growth.
The cool water is a prob for me. my 150 stays at 80. Could work in a 75 upstairs though where a tank can stay below 75. The biggest could be a 100g.

LFS keep them and many other tankbusters small for long peroids of time by feeding very sparingly. Sure, you could do that too, but its not exactly good for them, not to mention boring. If fed properly, a Yarrelli will outgrow a 75g quickly.

The fish at your store might also not be a yarelli. There are 2 other species in that genus that are seen in stores from time to time and look very similar. B. suchus (probably not the correct spelling) gets to about 30" and B. bagrus only 8".

tigerfangs, do ya keep tankmates with the B.yarelli, they are known to bite tankmate's scale off , is it true?

No tankmates. I'm sure it could and would do serious damage to them.
