i came to this forum cause thats all i have is cichlids and i was told to bake them but didnt say for what temp or how long

lol some people will advice you to treat the rock as if it was from Mars. SOAK IT IN SULFURIC ACID OR IT WILL KILL YOUR TANK!

Just boil it.

why come to the didhlid forum to ask about baking rocks? why do you need to bake them? you making rock candy?

Because maybe just maybe it is going to be the decor in his cichlid tank.

I have heard people say to bake rocks before, but, why bother.

What you really want to do is to test if the rock is water safe.

Here is a youtube link to the subject

You really want to make sure it is safe for your tank. One tank I had I put in what looked like a safe rock. The water quality went wonky and a couple of fish started acting sick and the quality did not improve with maintenance, so I decided to pull the tank apart. One of the nice flat rocks that I had put in had a killer iron content to it and had started rusting like crazy underneath. On the surface it looked ok, but, when removed an flipped over just covered with rust.

just be careful if boiling rocks. Sometimes there are air pockets in the middle which some how leads to the rock exploding. It's simple science... i don't understand it at all, but there are a few threads on this site about it. I think i even remeber a MFKer who posted an article about this killing someone
