bala sharks and breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
their the most awesomest. fastest. cutest little things ever:hearts: their safe in my tank believe me:D

I have 4 5" Bala's in my 120g and I had the same thing happen with two of them. It was fine for a while but they eventually did end up hurting each other. I put the bala that started it the most in another tank and things have worked out great ever since. All of them seem alot healthier since the seperation.

Well there we go, now we have someone that has had experience. I wonder if it could be the males fighting for there shot at the ladies??? :naughty::nutkick: With the little lady balas on the sidelines cheering the big boys on! :mwave:

I have 5 Bala's in a 200gal outdoor tank. I've been trying to bred them for over a yr. with not so much as even a febul attemp at spawning. The main trouble with Bala's is that they have to hit very high speeds to breed. They will hit top speed and pump into each other at the belly area or boune off each other. This is very hard to do in most common home tanks. It's not that the tanks not big enought it's just that. The speed they have to hit is all but impossable in the home tank.
Even in the tank I have mine in in the summer and spring time. They have the hardest time reaching top speed to breed. Most Bala's reach a avrange size of 12 to 18inches and max out at 24inches. They become sexable at 6 to 8 inches in size the male being larger then the female is one way of telling sex. But not the only way. Females will be skinner threw the belly area where as the male thicker. Most bala's will do a breeding type dance in a home tank. But this is as far as it will go. Have you ever seen them racing around the tank. They'll go so fast as to keep up with them becomes half the fun. Will this is just the start there racing each other can mean 2 things. 1. That a male female have found each other. 2. That two males are competeing for a female. That to will look like spawning dance.
So little is knowen on there breeding habits, that most of the attemps at breeding in home tanks. Will never even make it to the egg stage. We know that they are egg scathers also. But not much more then that is knowen. Mine are right at 10" and they have never even looked like they have wanted to spawn. I've added them to the outdoor tank twice and both times they just swim around and enjoy the larger space but that's about it.
To anyone wanting to be the frist to bred in captivatey. There is a artical that was posted by Texas tech research center for wild life habitats and spawning center for indangered spices. That says by the year 2010 the bala shark will reach it's max amount of captive sells and become another spices to be over sold to the hobbiest. There for we need to pull this amazing spices before it to fall victum to the it's numbers being gone in the wild. They have also stated that. There should be a reward for the avarge hobbiest . That does bred this spices in a home tank.
I have this artical and will scan it and place it up for all to see. The bad part about this artical is. That they put 3/4's of the blame on the spices being almost gone from the wild on us the american hobbiest. Saying that 80% of the sales is acounted for by the U.S. market. Also that by the year 2008 this fish will be added to the red list of indanger spices. So good luck to all of us trying to becom the frist. I know I've been trying for 2 yrs and nothing not even a single egg spawn.

i have heard of them growing to 18 inches but no larger;)..... your information is great and i have a great idea to see if i can get them to breed now... thanks:D

Thanks but I've lost the artical. I was hoping to have it posted. It has so much more info for breeders and helpful tips on how to produce spawning. The biggest thing that it said was there deit. It needed to be very very high protain for at least a week before spawning. I'll keep looking for it and hopfully I'll find it.
