I have a troubling issue with my group of balas, which is smaller than it was two weeks ago. I had six, seen somewhat clearly in this photo from less than two weeks ago.

Starting roughly 5-7 days ago, and I'm ashamed to say I did not notice exactly when, 3 of these fish simply disappeared, the 3 largest seem to be the only that remain.

I've outlined several theories, wanted to get some feedback on what's plausible and what's not.

Theory 1: escape. The only opening to the tank is this 48"x2" hole covered mostly by the light strip. There is also a copious amount of tangled wood at the surface of the tank making jumping imo less likely.

I searched the area thoroughly. No bodies anywhere nor has there been any decaying fish smell. However, if the fish were to reach the floor it would almost certainly be carried off by my cat.

Theory 2: intraspecific aggression. I have not heard it a lot, but have heard stories of balas offing each other. It seems so unlikely to me, none of the fish ever exhibited any tattered fins and I've never seen any outright aggression except perhaps some light chasing.

Theory 3: this guy.

I just don't know. Again, ive heard scattered accounts of chalceus bullying fish that resemble them. He seems chill at all times, but I have witnessed him chasing the balas when I sit still in the fishroom awhile. It seems odd to me that the disappearances have occurred when the balas reached nearly the same size of this chalceus. Again, never saw any torn fins or damage though, and no remnants of them remain in the tank. However, I think it's worth noting that any fish carcass would be quickly ripped apart by my pictus pack. I did notice that my filter socks seemed to clog very quickly last weekend. This Theory could also work in conjunction with theory 1, chased and spooked into jumping.

Theory 4: unexplained disease. I'm not terribly experienced with balas, but have kept them before. They seemed very healthy to me last I saw them. Every other fish in the tank too. The remaining three are just as hungry and boisterous as ever.

Theory 5: very good hiders. Unlikely, I've never seen balas hide before, and they would have to be incredibly committed to stay hidden for so long.

Theory 6: teleportation/fish rapture. Also unlikely, but worth checking into imo. These fish could've decided to shed their mortal coil and simply dematerialized into the water column. This is really just a transcendental evolution of theory 1.

Thanks for reading, would appreciate any help.

How big is the chalceus? A small bala would be a pretty easy snack as far as I know, especially if you couldn’t find any bodies.
I doubt they are hiding - balas are always out in the open.

I was hoping someone would delve the chalceus theory as it is actually a bit more complex than it seems imo.

The chalceus is approximately 4.5-5" SL by my eye, the balas had all reached about 4" SL. here's a vid from just 3 days ago of the tank.

Where it gets interesting is that I've successfully kept chalceus and balas together before...and they were near full size.

Where it gets more interesting imo is that I believe (99%) that this is a different, less commonly seen chalceus, Chalceus guaporensis. This is detailed in the latter pages of this thread.

The chalceus would not be top of my list.
If the top was always open at any point along the length then bala’s jumping would be my choice, especially if spooked.
But even then, for three to go together would be strange.
Assuming you have no “night time assassins” of the catfish world in there that could be culprits?
What is on the left in the dark area? Could they be hiding? Bullied.
No way bodies can be sucked against a filter intake?

I doubt jumping, one maybe, but three, so not likely. Aggression between the Balas, such a mild mannered fish? Nah, doubt it. The chalceus, again mild mannered, and especially when it's the same size as the balas, I doubt that theory too.

I have no experience with pictus cats but I'm going to throw this one in the mix. You say you have a pack? I'm guessing, as with most cats that they're nocturnal for the most part? Are they well fed? Are they all getting their share of feed given they're a bottom feeder?

Maybe, just maybe, the pictus might be on the hungry side, and took a liking to your balas. Even though balas are a swift fish, would a single one be a match for a pack of hungry pictus at night?

They'd certainly clean the evidence up leaving no trace.

Other than that, my money is well and truly on your theory number 6. A bit outside the box, lol.

I'm in agreement with (Fisherman) Dave. They are great jumpers, that sized hole is plenty big enough and if one can jump out, the others can too.
Is your cat looking fat and happy?

Hmmm. didn't even think of the pictus. Never trust a catfish I suppose. There are six and they are all near full grown, you can see a few of them lurking under the log in the video above. I had assumed they were taking out lampeyes in the night, but didnt think they would jump a bala, mostly since they hadn't already in the several months keeping this stock together. Many of the loaches are smaller than the missing balas too. They are fed well ime but nowhere near overfed, they are chunky and always hungry, ravenous really. I am positive they would devour any remains if any fish was injured or killed though.

The jumping was always #1 on my list. I could see them finding some way out up there especially since they seem to like grazing algae right under the light. I will have to seal it up just to cover that base. It's just really odd that they all seemed to have vanished in a short window of time...

I will do another search but I checked everywhere pretty thoroughly, the overflows, sump, and e drains are clear. The only place they could in theory be hiding is in the Ohko pile but just why lol.
