Bala sharks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is my tank, an 8ft, 300 gallon. In it I have 3 big bala sharks. The largest is about 15" and is visible behind the pearsei (apx 12"). The other two balas are about 12". I dont find them to be skittish at all in my living room with constant movement going on. They are not afraid at all and are quite personable. But they do need space, when they are feeding the largest will chase the next one down in size to try and keep it from feeding. This is when you realize how fast they can get from one side of the tank to the other. Honestly there are times I look at these guys and think they need a bigger tank...

Beautiful setup

Thanks every one for there in put and reply and sorry for my late reply.

From what you guys have said it sounds like it's not the fish for me, must say I'm a little disappointed as I've never kept them befor a school of them would look awesome but unfortunately for now biggest I can go is 6ft tank wise so I'll have to add it to my bucket list.

Thanks again every one for your replys.

No problem! You may be interested in the Borneo redfin shark, as it delivers a comparable look but is much smaller.

I really like my roselines, a school of those would do great in a 125 I bet

Here are some more shark options, by the way:

-Roseline shark. Not the same color as a bala but about the same shape, and very colorful in its own right. Ninja'd.
-Red tail/rainbow sharks. Only do this if you want to dedicate the tank to them, as they need a very large group of their own species (8-12 minimum) to disperse arguments adequately.

You may be interested in the Borneo redfin shark,

I had the chance of getting a group of Borneo redfin sharks a few months ago but I've just too much stock, awesome looking fish. And yes, the Roseline shark (Dennison barb) is always a good shout, though expensive!

I'll add filament barbs to the list too. None of those fish would get anywhere near the adult size of the Bala, in fact I'd say the Borneo redfin shark is even nicer than the Bala. If my balas disappeared over night I'd replace them with a school of redfins in a heartbeat.

Even then I’d be afraid to keep more than one red tail. Definitely like the roseline idea though.

We’ll my plan was to upgrade to a 125-150 and keep them there for about a year or two than when me and my wife move into a house I was going to buy a 300 gallon tractor tub and make a outdoor pond for them Right now I have my ball is in a 90 gallon they are about 6 inches I’m going to be upgrading my tank within a year to a 125 or 150 then I’m going to be moving into a new home and setting up a pond out front of my house or out back and then when they get really big move them out to the pond how long do you think I can keep a Bala and a 90 gallon and in a 150 what size should I be moving them to the pond

What can I do to keep them I have grown so attached to them their about 6 inches in my 90 gallon I’m going to be upgrading to a 125-150 in the next year but would I be able to buy like a kiddie pool fill that up and keep them in their permanently??? Or a 300 gallon horse tub like this one ??? If that tub will be good enough what exactly do I need I’m guessing a sponge filter or two with an air pump, would I need a heater??? And I would have to get some kind of cover for it right?? I just really need to know I love my balas and I wanna keep them I feel bad that their in a 90 gallon and I wanna move them to something bigger but I can’t really put a 180 on my second floor so please any advice would be greatly appreciated
