Ball Python Feeding Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if the snake is used to eating live, feeding F/T might be a challenge..they key is not to give up. thaw the rodent out then warm up in hot water..dry, then try to feed.

microwaves should never be used to thaw out rodents, if any part is cooked it could harm the snake or cause illness.

It's all good, Just as long as the correct information is provided. OP details on the snake and habitat...

I am a lifelong herp nut and snakekeeper, but basically, i'm looking to get my first Ball and since I'm not really looking for any special morph, I figured I would get one from a Reptile Rescue. There are so many snakes that need good homes because of ignorant people impulsively buying them and then giving them up when they realize they made a mistake, therefore there is no need for me to buy from a pet store or breeder as long as I cna get a healthy snake. So, as far as habitat goes....that has not been established.

I originally asked this question because a few of the snakes I will be looking at tomorrow are eating live mice, and I would prefer to feed frozen/thawed. They are more readily available and it is much safer for the snake. I know BP's can be picky with their food, so I was wondering if anyone has tried to make the switch successfully. I agree that as long as the mouse is warm and smells like a mouse, then it should not be an issue.

I have never had mine refuse either. Try prescenting the room if feeding frozen presents a challenge by leaving it by the tank for a bit. Also you can make the mouse do the "dance" as some call it to make it look live. As far as frozen, make sure they are completly thawed, you can do this by putting it in a plastic bag then running warm water over it, and then leaving it out for a bit to thaw completely. I always check the head as I heard that takes the longest to thaw, and make sure its warm.
