ball python setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A contractor mishap cost me all of my herps a while back. Their was Sheetrock being done and the contractors were supposed to seal off the work area when sanding. Well they didn't do it properly and my entire house was coated in a nice layer of white dust. including the interior of everyone of my enclosures. I had 18 dead snakes and 1 very sick 9 1/2' Red Tail 3 days later. It seems that the gypsum in sheetrock is poisonous if ingested or inhaled in large quantities. over $2000.00 in vet bills and lost the Red Tail on day 8. Haven't had a snake since until about a month ago. friend of mine had an 18' standard Ball that she was power feeding (Unknowingly) and it was biting her a lot so she dropped it off to me. My 6 year old has been responsible for it since it showed up. With me watching over his shoulder very closely. He handles it daily, feeds and waters it himself, and hasn't been bitten 1.

I have never heard of tiger ball pythons, is there another name for that morph or no?

Nope. I've always known them as Tigers.

20 is great for Hatchlings to 2'. I'd look for a 40 breeder of a 55 after that... Good luck...

it's a 20 long, and a male ball python. therefore, it's big enough for the snake's entire life, as a male ball python will generally max at 3-4 feet, and the cage only needs to be 2/3 the snake's body length. plus, ball pythons prefer a smaller cage for their size, so a 55 could actually be stressful

I find that a 20L will work for their entire life, but I keep my males in either 40B size or 55g. They have never had a problem with being stressed and as long as their are hides for them, won't be. I also agree with ditching the lamp and going with an under tank heater. All of my ball pythons LOVE their heat pads only seen one out under a lamp and that was when she had just laid her eggs.

finally upgraded tank size to a 20 long, added a heat pad on the right, and switched to Eco-earth coconut fiber substrate:nilly:

Looks good. The only advice I have is that with BP's it is recommended to have an identical hide on each side of the tank...1 on the warm side and 1 on the cool. The rationale behind this is that BP's are very secretive animals and like to hide ALOT. Having identical hides on each side will not force the BP to choose between feeling secure and being the right temperature.

Also, your hide is kinda too open for what BP's prefer. They feel more secure in an almost completely enclosed hide like this...http://www.reptilebasics.com/small-hide-box.html

Don't think that I am flaming you....That is not my intention at all. But a lot of times when BP's go off feed it is because they are stressed or not comfortable. I am just offering ways to help keep your BP feeling secure and happy. Good luck.

i suggested a more enclosed hide, but he hates anything plastic, so good luck convincing him..
