Very much south..
Hello there, my friends, I was offered a baby ball ( gorgeous lovely beautifull ) around 1 foot long..

now I know a bit about fish, frogs, turtles. Know zilch about snakes ( beyond my odd kingsnake )

Now the guy said that ball will bite you..may take a year, but they, being agressive, will bite you...I really would not want the added stress of a biting fat sausage ( like the ball will be )..BUT its is the first time I hear they are agressive and I kind of have the idea that guy doesn't know a lot about balls..

any help, URGENT, would be greatly appreciated because I have untill tomorrow lunch time to decide......

Help, my learned friends, Jessica, Ophisuchus, Davo, etc etc etc et al:):):):)

Miguel, for the most part, balls will just shy away from you (excuse me..LOL) on a serious note, its the odd one that will bite you, not the odd one that won't.

Your are right in thinking this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, as ball pythons are DEFINATELY not an aggressive species, however, you do get untame ones and the odd ones that bite and strike freely, if this is the one, it could take some time to turn it around. Has it bit the previous owner?

Is it 'untame'

or is the owner just saying this python will eventually bite..(in which case I presume you won't have any such problem) but I wonder is this the reason he is getting rid?

If you can, see the python in the flesh, thats the best way to tell. good luck :)

I've seen it. had it in my hands..

the guy is a trader, with a room full of the awesomest stuff you can imagine, b«from burmese to green trees, and so forth and turtles and you name it....and he told me that balls were agresseive. That they are on a third place among agressive pythons, after reticulats and burmese..I got the feeling he knows next to nothing, but he offered me very good conditions 'till tomorrow....

would love to have one of those sausages....should I? I guess I will, but your "voucher " will always help me.

if it did not strike, hiss, or bite you, then don't believe a word.

If it ain't biting you now, more than likely it won't.

Not to say it never will, but I promise you, royals/balls are NOT aggressive, they prefer to curl into a ball and hide. I've had corns worse LOL.

Like I said, if it was not biting there and then, more than likely the particular animal was not an aggressive one, and meh, burms aren't aggressive when tamed properly..we had one (silly I know..but I was only nine..) that I could kiss on the face when it was a baby.. LOL

Can't say it enough, balls are generally the most docile species :)

Aggressive balls are usually wild-caught balls. An old herper friend of mine was shocked when I said "People suggests Ball Pythons as good starter snakes" since before Ball Pythons were captive-bred or captive-hatched, they were aggressive as heck and she stayed away from Ball Pythons for a really long time.

I've come across royals (wc) that shy away and don't bite...

Anyway, if CB (I should have said) you really have no problem if you handled it without getting bitten...and I would say go for it.

Though I wille be honest, when generally aggressive, they ARE aggressive, if its a case of not being handled for a while, they are still sound, just abit more jumpy/shy :)

RESPECT IT. My philosphy with taming animals (most dont even need it when CB) is to respect them and let them get used to you on their own time, not yours. Let him get used to you doing maintenence and eventually you wont be seen as a threat. Ofthen though, all this is broken intstantly when someone gets impatient and force handles an animal, then all trust and association with humans just goes down the drain. Thats especially true with the more intelligent herps.

But anyway, as long as its not devilishly aggresive, I would go for it if you really want one. No doubt balls are EASY as pie, but I just dont think they are very fun at all. But I guess you gotta have at least one lap snake right?

well i was affraid too when i was looking for a snake, everywhere i went, and i said i wanted a "nice" or "docile" snake, they said ball python. i have had mine for a week now.

he has never struk at me once, he would prefer to just go into his hide and chill. he did hiss at me once though. but thats it.
