ball python

Its either a ball Python, red tailed boa, or a carpet python.

What would you choose?

These animals and their needs are quite different... it all depends on what you are looking for...

Ball Pythons stay small (3~4') and are known as being docile. They hide the majority of the time....

Red Tail Boas get much larger (5~8'), therefore they take a much larger enclosure and as adults pose a threat when handled. While they just sit there the majority of the time, they tend to sit out in the open where they can be seen.

Carpet Pythons tend to get 6~8' but are thinner snakes. This also makes them much easier to handle by yourself at longer lengths (less muscle per foot). They are also more active snakes. On a down side they have a reputation of being nippy when young and this carries into adulthood if not properly socialized.

I agree with Toby, he seems to know what he's talking about here. Just remember every city (and state) has length limits when it come to captive snakes. Ball pythons are usually under the max length limit, but as you approach over 6' more and more places become unaccepting to those breeds.
If you like the ball, go with your instinct. Mind loves being handled and has never nipped. While he was young, he would cruze around his habatat at all times. Now that he's older, I know when he's hungry when he's out during the day. I don't mind this, he's been the easiest pet to care for ever. (made it really easy when I had to go on vacation)

I still have some research to do. I'm leaning towards a red tail or BP. Any more information on either of these species?

For a first snake, you can't go wrong with a ball python. The manageable size and docile nature of ball pythons makes them awesome pet snakes.

Red tails look cool, but their size means they will require more space and larger prey items when they are adult making their upkeep a bit more expensive.

I think I'm actually leaning on getting one of each. I will build a 4'x3'x3' enclosure for the red tail. Looking at getting a pastel or hypo. And I will be getting a 40 breeder for the ball python. Looking at a spider. Ill probably get a BP first though.

Good plan, are you getting it online or a show?

I'm going to the sandiego show on 19th, but i can't decide between a spider or a pastel.

I will be getting it at a show probably. I will most likely head back down to the Hamburg, PA show in August...I am going to get a ball python first...see how it goes then get a RTB.
