Basically mice are nothing more than hair and bones, rats have some meat on them. There's really no way to tell whether or not yours will accept rats more willingly, mine made the switch without problem. Balls are said to be finicky eaters which could be the reason yours isn't eating like it used to.
Ps: If you can get yours to eat prekilled/frozen I highly recommend it, it's a lot safer for the snake.
