Might not necessarily be a hybrid (looks that way though), but it is an example of an intentionally line-bred deformity. Unfortunately, "cute" shock value, regardless of the negative impact on the animal itself, sells.
Short body fish are not hybrids at all. Short body is a recessive trait same as E.B.J.D or Crowntail Betta. Just because a fish has a short body doesn't make it a hybrid. I think this whole B.P cross B.S started when breeders started selling their short body Cons as Bubble Gum Parrots. I know a lot of you Bubble Gum owners will be upset with me, but it's the truth, you paid $5.00 for a $.50c inbred fish. If you don't believe me try to make these supposed crosses yourself, and see what you get. Cross B.P with any of these fish, and if you end up with anything like the fish in question, I will kiss your @$$.
its impossible to tell if a fish is suffering. do you think a fish in pain could breed? and ballon has probably been bred with other fish before to. and i doubt that of a fish was born to pain and stress could even survive to adulthood. i think that fish born to pain would die and the ones that didnt suffer would survive. im not a fan of balloon varieties though

"balloon" fish aren't hybrids, they recieve the dwarf trait just like several people have said. However,
"balloon rams" could be dwarf rams, but all the "balloon" rams i've seen have been an artificial cross between a ram and scalare angel. Weird lookin fish, let me tell you
