Balloon mollies: friend or foe??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had some regular mollies in a tank of mine recently. They bred far too often for me. Everytime I turned around, the females were pregnant again....and again.....and again. The gravid spot is most visible on fish that aren't "dalmation" mollies or black mollies. They can also remain pregnant and deliver multiple batches of babies after mating just once (or so I've been told. Everytime I looked in the tank, the male was busy having his way with all the ladies so I never personally tested this.....).

I believe balloon mollies to be a man-made mistake, with limited mobility and a reduced quality of life.

These fish remind me too much of parrotfish to be worth keeping.

I own both Blood Parrots and Balloon Mollies, and tho some people may disagree with the fact that hybrids are "bad" I find my parrots to be some of the most responsive characters. I haven't gotten the balloons to breed yet, but my black mollies, and even my platies, have babies all the time. They have no issues getting food either.

The "Balloon" variety is a short body genetic deformity. Fish with this characteristic are prone to swim bladder problems.
