Bamboo Charcoal as Media =^_^=

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
K, juest read the site you linked to and it makes it out to be a miracle product, just like it's "cancer killing electrostatic therapy kit". Charcoal apparently has an "infrared ray effect" and has amazing anti-fungal properties.

In short, I think they try to over-glorify it. It is carbon and will work though.

Here we go, some high quality carbon available in bulk (15 lbs is a lot, carbon isn't very heavy).

Wow that looks like some high grade stuff =D yeah 15 lbs of carbon is very light i would assume that you'll need a lot of it to make 15 lbs =D

I Appreciate your info and you saying that it will work!~ Makes me happy to hear! and now i just gotta find a source Locally!

Thank you Very Much! =^___^=V

In its original form, charcoal is very light due mainly to its porosity even bamboo charcoal. All charcoal contains phosphorous, sulphur and heavy metals - all of which are highly undesirable in an aquarium!. It is as you prob know sourced from the combustion of wood, lignite, bituminous coal, peat, or coconut shells. The activation process which turns charcoal into Activated carbon involves either thermal (carbonization and gasification) or chemical (with zinc chloride or phosphoric acid) reactions. These processes eliminate all impurities (elements other than carbon), and increases the overall porosity....So i doubt you will see any major improvements if any over AC and you could possibly introduce other chemicals in the charcoal into the aquarium....the main reason farmers use the slash and burn technique to grow vegetables in the Amazon jungle is the high ash and associated mineral content in the burnt wood....these i would assume would be in your Bamboo charcoal and could be more problomatic than using none!

I hate to say it but, I doubt it. I'd say they use coal based unless it is something unimportant. But I doubt they would use coconut charcoal in a gas mask, I'd say they have moved onto different chemical substances. But I don't know, I just think. So if you know it or have at least heard it, it is good enough for me.

purrrrfect? really? is this what MFK is being reduced to? :shakehead

in this Hobby you gotta find things to save money.

I save money by not using carbon at all :D

Seriously, why do you need carbon? Remove medications?

Sorry itz the way i talk... does that mean the way i talk is degrading MFK? Making it look bad? If so then so much for the warm welcoming at the beginning in the "introduce urself" thread lol.

Any ways i wont let that bother me.. =D

But yeah true i can save money by not using charcoal at all.

Partly to save money if i ever wanted charcoal... and also for the sake of putting it, cuz i mean it does remove stuff... itz 6 times more absorbent than regular hardwood charcoal.. Bamboo has is like more porous and made of many smaller fibers. If itz safe for humans to using bathing, cooking, not just by burning i mean putting in rice to absorb odor, using in oil deep frying,etc.. then it should be safe for fish.

Unless out of the blue someone argues that.. fish will feel it more because they are living in the water.. while we humans who might use it for food.. only eat small quantities of it.. and there fo rit wont effect us as much as fish.. lol.. i dunno what im rambling now lol.

Well I know some people have systems with out carbon.. and some people do have systems with it.. theres no right or wrong way... Many reason to use carbon...or not use it.. it would depend on your set up and everything. I made this thread cuz i was fascinated about bamboo carbon when i saw an ADA filter media made from bamboo carbon.. and so it made me curious and wanted read more about it. And I just wanted to opinions.. which i got.. which is good cuz im happy for the different feed backs. Thank you again for the Inputs. Just wanted to also share the "Enthusiasm" with Bamboo charcoal cuz itz such a cool thing.. as wierd as it might sound lol =^_^=

I agree with harleyK carbon is next to worthless in an aquarium. anything carbon can do a water change does better.......... In most cases.

amano has a product i stumbled upon that is almost exactly what you are thinking of...... not so crazy really. will it sink though?
