The leaves were out of the water. I believe if you leave them in the water for too long they just rot and dissolve.

Those "ribbon plants" sold in the tubes at pet stores, are the same thing, just variegated leaves. I've never bought one of those to go in my tanks either. They require more light than the plain green variety.
