I am a relative noob at keeping bichir, so this is just a concern (I have a large 16"+ Endli and a couple of tiny 5-6" Dels in a grow-out).
Unless the bamboo is considerably larger (from the inside) than the thickness of the bichir, I would be worried what happens if the bichir get's stuck in it.
The shelter I would prefer for bichirs is something which can be "dismantled" in case of an emergency..
So, if I could get hold of a bamboo which can sink (and which won't rot in the water), I would cut it along the length to create a half-tube I can place on the tank floor to serve as a Bichir shelter.
