The first rule of the banned club is that you don't talk about the banned club

I'd say you don't break more rules if that's what got you banned. If if there was no reason to get banned, still no reason to break a rule. One should send an email to either explain the situation or ask why the ban was put into place. Sneaking back on was not the appropriate response.
