barbels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I couldn't pass on this one. It just makes me angry when people deal with fish the same way they deal with clothes...when there's something wrong with it, they discard it. I mean come on it's not a friggin disposable item.

Love the fish, care for them, give them everything they need...that's what fishkeepers do. Normally. I have had plenty of damaged fins/barbels/scales during my life of fishkeeping, and it never stopped any of my fish. Put some effort into it, and the fish will reward you. Barbels, like most parts of the fish, can regenerate. But that does not happen in 3 days !!!

I don't need my fish to be perfect. I only need them to be my fish.
well said my friend

I'm sure you're not referring to MY personal fish keeping in this manner. I was simply pointing out why someone might want a fish with all of its apendages. And why one that does not might be a disspointment to some people.

That being said I have a perfect example of a silver arrowanna and tho I'd like for him to stay that way I'm sure once the cichlids in my tank grow up they will rip them barbels off.
Will I toss my arrow if that happens? No.
Will I get rid of him so that he does not spend the rest of his life harrassed by big cichlids? Possibly.
Was I planning on getting rid of him when My ATF was bullying him? yes.
Why? because the fish does deserve to have the best possible life that it can while confined to these jails we call aquariums.

I don't think it will grow back. Have seen a few adult aros with damaged barbels.... some have only 1 left. Thats why its important not to scare them which will make them jump and hurt themselves.

it will grow back, but sadly the one that got broken wont be as straight as the other barbel. WHATS THE BIG DEAL? actually everything from the fins to scales to the barbels are included in arowana competition criteria. in asian arowanas especially, its a very big deal. the barbels symbolizing the chinese character for the number 8, complete the "dragonfish", it wont be a dragon without those.

thats why some very serious hobbyists do operations just to improve barbel balance, fins, etc. they know what theyre doing. theyre after the aesthetic elevation of the asian arowana. they belong to another level.....

well i love my aro now and dont care 2 much about the barbels...dont flame me cuz i dont like its 1 barbel..u cant say u go to a petstore and pick out the ugliest arowana..u want ur fish to be the best it can be as stated by sum1 else

very good reply bro, thats always the most important thing. dedication to the fish you have;)

no one can say it will grow back or not as it all depends on where the barbel has broken

if the brake is right at the butt it may not grow back if its half way it should be fine

if after a few months its not started to grow back you can catch the aro and hold it in a wet towel and pin prick the barbel to draw blood this will stimulate growth
i have done this before and it works
